Zinc:

A collection of information and data on apparent needs, uses and availability. including tables of ‘Common’ daily consumption and sources. Brazil nuts followed by Almonds seems to provide the highest amount (for a vegan diet)
Consider: 1. Absorbtion. In a good system you may need much less. 2. What about seaweed and 3. Don’t ask the fruitarians :D

Vitamin B12

Those on an animal free diet will not obtain B12 directly from animal foods. However 1. Many people may consume an adequate amount but not be able to absorb it. 2. Eating lots of organic veggies without thoroughly washing them to clinical standards means you may get some anyway. B12 is the excretion of a bacteria. :)  3. And how do fruitarians cope? :lalala:

cyano or methyl b12

[Kefir_making] Cyanide and Vit B12 (OT)

“When most of us think of vitamin B12, the molecule we really have in mind is cyanocobalamin or cyano B12. As its name suggests, cyano B12 has a cyanide group (CN) attached, whereas methyl B12 carries a methyl group (CH3) instead. Very little of the body’s natural B12 is in the cyano form under normal circumstances; …..”

E Numbers

The European Union in its wisdom hides all manner of additives behind numbers. Inform yourself about some of the more questionable ones.

Aspartame (1,2,3) is listed on the US weapons list. It was banned in the USA but some big time investor got into politics and got in back in the food chain.
(1) Too Sweet or Not to Sweet? After reading this old file I grabbed please read Not Quite about Aspartame!
(2) Aspartame: History of Fraud and Deception. The trufax.org site is still active but the original of this document is missing. Have emailed them.
(3) Metabolism: “Another problem with aspartame is the phenylalanine that is produced in the breakdown of it. . .”

If you must have junk foods use sugar as in Original Cola not Diet etc.

Composition of Vegan Foods

I was, until this blog was an issue, working on a searchable database for Wholesome Vegan Foods.

The idea was to bring it to the point where a list of foods which constitute a meal can be entered, saved and the combined nutritional data could be retrieved.

This is still ongoing and the original intention was to enable it to show the biological value of amino acids in a combination of foods.

So if this seems useful to you prompt me to get on the case :)

Kidney stones and Cataracts

Oxalates and carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) are the nutrients under consideration. What the article doesn’t clearly say, is that whereas spinach may be good for the eyes it may not be so good for you if you have kidney stones. dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/health
